Zelenskyy: hundreds of thousands of families without power after Russian attacks

Hundreds of thousands of families in Ukraine remained without electricity after overnight Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday 1 November, according to Deutsche Welle. The Ukrainian leader said four regions had been hit and repair crews were working to restore supplies.

The attacks affected the Dnipropetrovsk, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr and Khmelnytskyi regions. Zelenskyy said the targets included electricity substations, transformers and power lines supplying homes — infrastructure on which household electricity supplies directly depend.

The scale of the outages reported by the president reflected the situation at the time of his Sunday statement. The figure referred to hundreds of thousands of families, rather than a precise number of people. It was not a final assessment of the attacks’ impact. Zelenskyy said repairs were under way, but no timetable for fully restoring electricity was given.

The information about the facilities hit and the extent of the power cuts comes from Zelenskyy’s statement, as reported by DW. The report does not include a separate assessment from electricity network operators.

Zelenskyy also renewed his appeal to the United States, Europe and Ukraine’s other partners to speed up deliveries of missiles and weapons needed to defend against Russian attacks.
