US forces carried out fresh strikes in southern Iran on the evening of 6 November, Euronews reports. Donald Trump said the targets were Iranian air defence systems on Qeshm island. At the same time, the US president claimed progress in talks with Tehran mediated by Qatar.
Trump described the operation as small. Iranian state media, meanwhile, reported that two missiles had struck the Suza area of Qeshm island. In the account cited by Euronews, they did not identify the facilities hit or the extent of any damage. The claim that air defence systems were targeted therefore remains the US account of the operation.
Qatar continues mediation
The fresh strikes came alongside diplomatic contacts. According to Euronews, Trump spoke to Qatar’s emir on Friday about efforts to de-escalate tensions. In a statement quoted by the broadcaster, Qatar said its mediators remained in close contact with both Washington and Tehran in support of the ongoing negotiations.
Iran’s nuclear programme is one of the issues dividing the two sides. Citing anonymous Associated Press sources from two Middle Eastern governments, Euronews reported that Iran was considering proposals put forward by Qatar to address differences between Tehran and Washington.
Trump’s claim of progress does not amount to an agreement. The report describes negotiations still under way, with Qatar continuing to mediate and proposals intended to help resolve the dispute under consideration. The strikes on 6 November show that military action and diplomatic contacts are continuing in parallel.
