Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure cause widespread power cuts

More than 850,000 people in Ukraine lost power following Russian attacks overnight on 7–8 November, Euronews reported. The strikes affected regions including Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv. That figure does not represent the number still without electricity: power was subsequently reported restored in Kharkiv region, while supplies were gradually being restored in Dnipropetrovsk region.

According to a statement from energy company DTEK, cited by Euronews, Russian forces carried out a large-scale attack on the energy sector, hitting key facilities in Dnipropetrovsk region. The company reported that more than 600,000 residents had been left without electricity in the Pavlohrad, Samar, Kamianske and Dnipro districts, as well as in the city of Dnipro. Later updates from the authorities indicated that power was being restored gradually.

In Kharkiv region, local authorities reported power cuts affecting around 250,000 customers. Euronews reported that the authorities subsequently announced that their electricity supply had been restored. These regional figures illustrate the scale of the disruption, but they are not directly comparable: DTEK referred to residents, while the Kharkiv authorities counted electricity customers. The total of more than 850,000 people reported by Euronews should therefore not be treated as an independently calculated sum of those two figures.

The impact extended beyond electricity supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also reported disruption in other parts of the country. According to his account, 140 blocks of flats in Zhytomyr region remained without heating following a Russian attack.

Euronews’ report, published on 8 November, describes widespread disruption that was changing as repairs progressed: some supplies had already been restored, while problems with electricity and heating persisted elsewhere.
