Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has reported fires aboard two tankers and said the vessels had been stopped in the southern waters of the Strait of Hormuz. Euronews reported the statement on Friday 30 October. The report does not independently confirm the incidents, and it remains unclear whether the vessels are additional tankers or ships already mentioned in earlier reports.
According to the Guard’s statement, as reported by Euronews, the tankers attempted to use routes that Tehran does not recognise as permitted. The Iranian force also claimed that the vessels had switched off their navigation and positioning systems and ignored radio warnings. These are allegations made by the Iranian side, rather than independently established circumstances.
The statement did not identify the tankers or their flags. It also gave no precise explanation for the fires and no information about the condition of the crews. It therefore does not establish how the incidents occurred or what consequences they had for those on board.
Euronews noted that it was unclear whether the two tankers mentioned in Friday’s statement were additional vessels or the same ones covered by earlier reports. The announcement should therefore not be treated as confirmation of two new incidents or added to previous reports as separate cases. The date of the statement also does not establish exactly when the fires occurred.
Diplomatic efforts are continuing in parallel. According to Euronews, Qatari mediators returned to Tehran on Friday to continue efforts towards an agreement between Iran and the United States. Their return does not, however, mean that an agreement has been reached or determine the outcome of the talks.
