Novaya Gazeta announces closure, blaming Russian authorities

Last updated: Reading time: 2 min

Moscow-based Novaya Gazeta announced on 30 October that it would cease operations. The newspaper said it would switch off its servers and leave its premises on 9 November 2026, blaming the Russian authorities and security services for forcing it to close.

In a statement published on its website, the editorial team described losing both its workplace and access to readers’ financial support. According to the statement, its reader donation system was disconnected at the same time as it received notice to vacate its premises, cutting off the newspaper’s funding.

The team described these steps as coordinated pressure that had forced it to stop working. Its accusation against the authorities and security services is the newspaper’s account, rather than an independently established finding about responsibility for the closure.

Servers due to be switched off on 9 November

The announcement does not mean operations have already ended. The statement gives 9 November as the date for switching off the servers and leaving the premises. Novaya Gazeta Europe also reported the planned closure.

The editorial team said it would publish one final issue, but did not give a publication date.
