UK government announces £15m plan to tackle misogyny

The UK government has announced plans to put £15 million into a fund to tackle misogyny — hostility and prejudice towards women. According to The Guardian, the money would support work in schools, workplaces and public spaces. This is a funding announcement, with confirmation of the amount expected in Wednesday’s Budget.

The fund is intended to cover the whole UK and would be led by Bridget Phillipson, the minister for women and equalities. Organisations would be able to apply for support for activities including mentoring for young people, workplace training and campaigns to improve the safety of women and girls.

According to The Guardian, Phillipson describes the fund as a way to educate people and prevent everyday sexism, highlighting problems such as harassment and discrimination at work. The proposed support would therefore extend beyond schools and young people to address behaviour women encounter in their working lives and in public spaces.

Funding announced, not yet paid out

Ministers also intend to seek additional money from businesses and philanthropists. Those contributions have not been confirmed. Equally, the announcement of £15 million in government funding does not mean the money has already been paid to organisations.

The fund itself was announced in September 2026; the new information reported on 27 October concerns its planned funding. The Guardian does not give application dates or detailed rules for applying for support.

The latest announcement should not be confused with an earlier £20 million package to counter misogynistic influences in schools. The Guardian describes the initiatives separately: the new fund is intended to have a wider remit, also covering workplaces and public spaces.
